Nishizawa Gorge is at its best in late October and early November. The fall colours and natural beauty of the gorge combine to make a wonderful day out. However, this walk is a pleasure at any time of year.
The 10 km walk takes a little more than 3 hours to complete and is accessible to people with an average level of fitness. As there are areas where the rocks can get quite slippery, you had better watch your step.
The return walk from the gorge has a steep, but short climb and then an easy stroll along an abandoned narrow-gauge railway line. The railway was once used to transport logs from the mountainside.
If at all possible, visit on a weekday as this gorge is very popular with Japanese day-trippers.
